ABSTRACT

This chapter contains a spectrum of assessment case studies aimed at helping students to take responsibility for their own learning and development. Although self-directed or autonomous learning is often cited as a central aim of open and distance education, in practice it often takes a back seat, due to the prominence of teaching texts and accompanying packages of resources, which tend to have the reverse effect on learning. Managerial Development I and II are core units in the third year of the Bachelor of Management course within the School of Rural Management. Offered over consecutive semesters, the units focus on facilitating students in developing management and leadership abilities. The main reason for the draft report is to help students develop skills in undertaking a literature review and develop learning strategies within a supportive environment. These processes are new and daunting for many students.
