ABSTRACT

This chapter recognizes and assesses teachers: those largely responsible for the implementation of curricula. It outlines the debate over priorities among scholarship, teaching, and service; discusses how technology can be used in teaching; describes curriculum and classroom cultures and their impact on student outcomes; explores how a unit’s philosophy can effect who gets hired; and stresses the importance of advising. In many ways, teachers are independent contractors who are hired by the university to ply their craft. The scholarship of discovery is closest to what is normally known as research. Here “the curriculum is a route over which students will travel under the leadership of an experienced guide and companion”. Administrators normally covet people who fall into this category. These are the people with years of industry experience plus a strong academic background.
