ABSTRACT

This glossary lists frequently misused words and expressions. Academic and business writing is considered more formal than speaking or personal writing, so standard American English is used. The dictionary is the final authority on usage. Dictionaries employ the following labels for nonstandard usage:

Colloquial and Informal: acceptable in speech and informal writing but not in academic or business writing.

Illiterate, Nonstandard, Slang, and Substandard: not used in academic or business writing and only for effect in speech.

Archaic and Obsolete: outdated.
