ABSTRACT

A process-effective organization will be judged on its ability to deliver customized products or services to large numbers of customers at a low price. The strategic focus of a process-effective organization is to quickly and dependably deliver mass-customized products or services at the lowest possible price. The chapter tries to convince, the reader, that old-fashioned notions such as long-tenured employees, bureaucratic rules and policies, and a traditional management style of control and coordination are keys to success with the process-effective strategy. The management functions of most importance for process-effective organizations are: to ensure excellent communication between groups/teams who deliver the product or service, and to anticipate blockages in the systems before they occur and fix them. The process-effective type of promotional structure gives rise to a command, coordinate, control type of management style. Cross-training opportunities are of great value to process-effective organizations as they provide for depth of expertise to be called on when gap needs to be filled.
