ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the details of the administration and scoring of the Tell-Me-A-Story (TEMAS) test. These two procedures are reported together because a standardized administration generates more reliable scoring, thus yielding potentially more valid results. The clinician scores selected personality functions according to the adaptiveness of the resolution of the narratives in addition to scoring for other several functions. The TEMAS scoring system is comprised of nine personality functions, 18 cognitive functions, and seven affective functions. In the Record Booklet, specific predicted pulls for each card are denoted by a triangle in the scoring boxes of the Personality Functions. In light of the strong criticism of "projective techniques" as invalid and potentially harmful in providing inaccurate diagnostic profiles of clients, the authors have endeavored to develop a valid scoring system for a narrative technique, which was derived from the traditional thinking about projective tests.
