ABSTRACT

The model of influences on senatorial choice asserts that the relationship between the representative and the constituency is central to the politician’s craft, and the way that relationship is established and maintained depends on the individual’s personality and apprenticeship in which the craft was perfected. The relationship is a continuing one, but the constituency may be in the background of influences determining senatorial actions in Washington. This relationship is in the foreground when the representative returns to visit the constituency, and it explains the entire focus of the campaign for reelection.
