ABSTRACT

As shown in Figure 169 the engineering manufacturing process is composed of a series of 26 functions or steps, including those which are emphasized by computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM). Each function is part of an integrated system. The emphasis on CAD/CAM has created a significant need to understand the entire process described in this book, because CAD/CAM influences and changes each of them. There are many iterations and communication links between them. It is virtually impossible to diagram or explain without developing an almost hopelessly complex picture. The intent, then, is to describe the flow of data or describe the activities or tools necessary for building a good system. Most of the systems outlined are mechanized. Many are also on-line. We believe the interaction of on-line systems will become mandatory for sound management of a manufacturing company.
