ABSTRACT

Before we go any further on discussing how to use and interpret charts in an ongoing SPC program we first need to look at the subject of, "Is the process capable of meeting standards to start with?" If you do not first ascertain that the process is capable of producing within acceptable standards, you may well be flogging a dead horse in trying to implement statistical methods to control it. As we mentioned in Chapter I, if a process is incapable of producing up to standards SPC will not fix it, control it or improve it. Statistical methods will, however, tell you the process is incapable.
