ABSTRACT

In the low molecular weight region the viscosity of a polymer in solution is more strongly influenced by its molecular weight than by any other single factor. As .a consequence, the solids content of an alkyd at a given viscosity to a large extent is governed by the 26mean molecular weight. High solids coatings can simply be achieved by processing the alkyd to a low enough molecular weight. This approach alone is not sufficient, however, since it would lead to too much quality impairment.
