ABSTRACT

The most important element of a fire loss control program is the life safety of building occupants and employees. In today’s business and industrial world, the safety and health of the employee are emphasized more than ever before. Understanding the life safety concept is important as a step in looking at the safety element in a fire loss control program. The factors relating to the nature of the fire that most affect the life safety of people are the ignition potential, the growth of the fire, and the spread of fire and smoke. The Life Safety Code deals with occupancy groups according to their safety hazard. These groups are assembly, educational, health care and penal, residential, mercantile, business, industrial, storage, and unusual structures. An emergency action plan should be an integral part of the life safety element in a fire loss control program.
