ABSTRACT

This chapter indicates classes of materials that may be considered hazardous due to their properties and points out how substances may be safely handled and controlled. It discusses suitable extinguishing agents that can be used to control fires should they occur. Fires involving flammable and combustible liquids cause extensive property damage, and the handling and storage of these materials are a threat to personnel safety. Materials used in piping should be resistant to the corrosive properties of the liquid handled, and, in addition, the material should be resistant to heat and mechanical damage. Fire fighters know that burning gases under pressure must not, under any circumstances, be extinguished unless it is possible to control the gas flow. Most common gases found in industry are lighter than air and, as a result of this characteristic, can be more readily controlled. Liquefied petroleum gases are the exception, because these gases, such as propane and the butanes, are heavier than air.
