ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses some of the hazards involved in common processes and operations that find widespread use in the industrial setting. The use of basements for operations or for any flammable liquid processing should be prohibited. It is also not desirable to conduct finishing operations in upper stories of multistory buildings. The permit is also signed by the persons performing the work and by support personnel to indicate that they are aware of the potential hazards and safe work practices that should be followed. It is particularly important that contractors follow the permit requirements, since they may not be familiar with the fire and explosion hazards in the facility. Employees performing welding, cutting, or other hot work should be properly instructed and qualified to operate the equipment and should be made aware of the fire hazards. Outside contractors should be instructed on the specific fire and explosion hazards that they may encounter in the facility.
