ABSTRACT

The volume of plastics being used today is huge and growing. In addition, new plastic resins and uses are developing rapidly, as value-in-use is constantly being upgraded through improved and innovative design. The organization leading the United States in the search for optimum recycling methods and procedures for durable plastics is the American Plastics Council. The American Plastics Council, along with the automotive and plastics industries, is devoting significant effort to improving plastics recycling techniques. Of course, environmental concerns are the driving force for recycling of durable plastics, but if the process for recycling is not economical it will not happen. Although the major resin suppliers are becoming more and more involved in returning recycled material to the field, it is unlikely that they will do their own regrinding of the scrapped plastics from durables before processing. Instead, a new industry is rapidly developing to do the regrinding, which calls for designing new machines specifically for the purpose.
