ABSTRACT

Alcohol use is a part of the lifestyle of 95% of adult Americans and is the most frequently abused substance. Approximately 30% of Americans have been given a prescription containing a sedative, tranquilizer, or sleeping preparation. Some 15% of persons under 35 years have tried cocaine, PCP, or opiates. An additional 15% have used marijuana. Although the personal sampling of legal and illegal substances is commonplace, only a small fraction of those who sample become regular users or abusers.
