ABSTRACT

Automatic pipets can be used to dispense known volumes of water in the volume calibration of tanks which can subsequently be used for flow measurement calibration. This chapter illustrates the precision with which known volumes of water can be dispensed from automatic pipets into tanks. The gravimetric techniques involve two weighings of a flask: one when empty and one when it contains the quantity of water delivered by the automatic pipet. The weighing flask is first weighed empty; the automatic pipet is then filled from the bottom through the stopcock until excess water passes through the automatic overflow tip. The mass difference between the two weighings is divided by the density of water at its temperature in the flask to calculate the volume delivered by the pipet. The automatic pipet is very simple in operation and easy to use very precisely.
