ABSTRACT
Functional equations and their solutions cannot be discussed without understanding the notion of a function. Thus in this chapter we shall summarise precisely what we mean when using the terms function, continuity and derivative. Most of these things are covered by the secondary school mathematics curriculum and readers familiar with them may omit this introductory chapter and proceed to Chapter 2.
