ABSTRACT

This chapter assumes that small quantity generators of hazardous waste do not have the means to permit their own on-site treatment or disposal facilities and must ship wastes off-site for disposal. The cost of permitting and operating a treatment, storage and disposal facility are prohibitive for all but the largest companies, and geographical considerations may prohibit certain disposal options in a particular region. Small quantity generators will normally have more than one disposal option available, however, and should carefully consider all of the ramifications of each suitable method. To keep transportation costs reasonable, it is necessary in most cases for materials from more than one generator to be combined on a truck. All hazardous waste disposal methods have drawbacks designed to make the selection of an appropriate method confusing.
