ABSTRACT

This chapter provides general summaries of US Department of Transportation (DOT) requirements for shippers of hazardous materials and wastes. DOT regulations are incorporated in both federal and state hazardous waste regulations. These standards are the minimum requirements with which the small quantity generator must comply for the transportation of hazardous waste. The reader is encouraged to review this exhibit and to refer to the referenced sections of Title 49 of the Code of Federal Regulations in order to better understand the structure and wording of transportation regulations. Hazardous waste programs are structured similarly at the state level, where the state legislature enacts the law and a state agency administers it. In turn, the administering agency develops regulations which are then published in the state’s administrative code.
