ABSTRACT

No provisions are provided for on-site treatment and disposal unless the laboratory can obtain a treatment, storage and disposal facility permit, a prohibitively expensive, time-consuming, and virtually impossible task for all but the largest and most powerful organizations. Proper management of laboratory wastes involves many factors: program administration, the waste manager, training, inventory analysis and control, on-site treatment and disposal, storage, packaging, and labeling, off-site disposal method selection, selection of a transporter, recordkeeping and reporting requirements. The best laboratory waste management programs are those that have the full support of the administration, both economically and philosophically. The waste manager should have training in hazardous materials management, both to provide a good foundation for the program and to meet federal and state requirements for training of those employees who handle chemical wastes.
