ABSTRACT

Landfills were once considered one of the least expensive alternatives for hazardous waste disposal. Although in some cases still economically attractive, there has been much pressure for more stringent regulation. Over the past decade, many landfills have become hazardous waste sites. Leachate generation can be grouped into three general categories, all with the potential to adversely affect groundwater: hazardous, conventional, and nonconventional constituents. Landfills and/or waste management unit are classified according to their ability to contain waste. The main components of landfills are the cover or liner system, and leachate collection and removal system. All new landfills by regulation are required to have double liners, a leachate collection and removal system, and a leak detection system. The utilization of contaminated soil as an ingredient in cold-mix asphalt for use as a liner material also has merit.
