ABSTRACT

A number of books (and some loose papers) among the Lord Chamberlain’s records list those who made up the Royal Household. At the Restoration a new start had to be made, re-appointing those of Charles I’s musicians who had survived the Interregnum, filling vacancies of those who had died in the meantime and creating some new places. The first rough lists in LC 3/2 and 3/33 (details from which are included in the main calendar) show the earliest appointments. From time to time new lists were compiled, all of which were modified in turn as membership of the Household changed. Dates beside the names seem to indicate when musicians were sworn in. This effectively marked the beginning of service, though many administrative hurdles remained. Some entries conclude with an extra name: ‘Ld. Daubigny’, ‘Mr. Purcell’, ‘Mr. Killigrew’, etc. It is not clear what these signify, but that person may have acted as a sponsor for the musician concerned.
