ABSTRACT

In this chapter, I introduce some of the methods that researchers use to explore the relationships between brain structure and function. I start with a brief review of classic techniques, many of which have been used by scientists for some considerable time. Next I identify some of the in-vivo techniques which allow researchers to visualise the structure and/or functioning of the ‘living’ brain. I conclude this chapter with an illustration of an exciting application of in-vivo imaging in psychiatry.
