ABSTRACT

Open focus requires the leader to provide crystal clear direction while allowing a tremendous amount of flexibility. The leader must simultaneously channel the team towards the purpose of the effort while encouraging and even stimulating innovative departures from the normal path. Leaders who want to promote intrapreneuring should clearly state their vision of the future so that intrapreneurs can work on creating innovation that directly relates to the purpose and strategy of the team. They should seek out intrapreneurs throughout the organization, not just for their ideas but because these are the people who will implement new ideas. It’s critical for the leader to grant his team the right to try new things, to fail and not be punished, to venture into areas that are uncertain. Breakthrough leaders must say “yes” more often than “no,” and they must be very open to new ideas and possibilities.
