Mathematically the greatest event to take place since the main text of the book was written is the proof of the so-called Mordell conjecture. Although its importance goes far beyond our immediate concerns (it has in fact been referred to by one of the more excitable professional mathematicians as the ‘proof of the century’) we are interested only in its implications for Fermat’s last theorem of Chapter 11.
