ABSTRACT

The complement of good management communications is the provision of adequate feedback paths through and across the organization. A competent project manager is available, but the firm has never had to handle a complex capital project before and has to set up the most suitable organization. The role is one of a facilitator or coordinator. The project manager has no line authority and cannot issue instructions to any departmental manager. A weak matrix is similar to the functional matrix already described for the manufacturing company, except that it is generally used to describe an organization handling several projects at the same time. A complete, all embracing, self-contained project team can be impracticable to organize in a manufacturing company owing to the nature of the facilities and machinery required. Communications across the various technical and professional disciplines are made easier when the project manager is in total command.
