ABSTRACT

The benefits to be derived from drawing a network are in themselves often worthwhile, even if no duration estimates are made, no time analysis takes place and the network is not used to control subsequent progress. Networking encourages a logical progression of thinking and planning. In fact a network planning meeting can be regarded as a productive form of brainstorming. In project management terminology, some planners recognize that the words ‘plan’ and ‘schedule’ can have different meanings. A plan is the listing or visual display that results when all project activities have been subjected to estimating, logical sequencing and time analysis. Bar charts derive from Gantt charts, named after their originator, the American industrial engineer Henry Gantt. The inability of bar charts to depict clearly the dependencies between different tasks has already been demonstrated. Bar charts have other limitations. Although it is possible to schedule more than 100 jobs on an adjustable bar chart, rescheduling is a different story.
