ABSTRACT

Five areas were examined on the Swedish West Coast: Tjorn; Sotenas; Arjang; Dais-Ed; and Tanum. Tjorn is the sixth largest island of Sweden, located approximately 50 kilometres from Gothenburg and 167 square kilometres in size. Three areas were examined in Finland: Iisalmi; Karttula; and Suonenjoki. Iisalmi is located approximately 80 kilometres from Kuopio on the main highway northwards. The Ribeira Sacra Lucense area of Galicia is a beautiful rural farming area with great tourist potential. Agricultural production remains in evident, although in some areas dairy and cattle farming are in decline. Four areas in the Scottish Highlands and Islands were identified for analysis: Strathspey villages; Ardnamurchan Peninsula; North Mainland of Shetland, Yell and Unst; and Sleat Peninsula. The North Wales area, centred on the Lleyn peninsula, is traditionally referred to as “Welsh Wales”, since it hosts a high proportion of Welsh speakers and contains some of Wales’ finest scenery around the coastline and the Snowdonia mountain range.
