ABSTRACT

Culture is a human achievement that is transmitted from one generation to another. Let us deal with the idea of culture as a heritage transmitted over generations. This approach to cultural studies emphasizing the developments that enter into a tradition over time is not in conflict with the other two approaches already employed — namely, culture as ethnicity or culture as religion. In a longitudinal perspective on culture it could well be the ethnic or religious heritage that is at the centre of attention. However, in Part IV we will examine traditions as something in addition to ethnicity and religion.
