ABSTRACT

This chapter draws together the main contributions of our study of the Aged Temporary Housing Area (ATHA) protest. It discusses the theoretical implications of our analysis, with a personal note about our reflections on our methodology and the extent to which we achieved the original aims of the study. The chapter suggests an agenda for future research in field of urban movements. The ATHA protesters attempted to mobilize both external and internal resources such as participants, organizations, skills and experience in order to win concessions from government. The chapter examines resources that the actors could offer, and their ideological preferences, and then proceeds to examine the interplay among these actors. It concludes a discussion about the development of the ATHAs, and the housing movement after 1997 when Hong Kong is subject to a new political context and to Chinese housing policy. The chapter also presents some of the key concepts discussed in this book.
