ABSTRACT

During the last Session of Parliament the Planters, Merchants and others, interested in and trading to his Majesty’s Sugar Colonies in America, laid their humble Petition and Representation before the Honourable the House of Commons, setting forth the many Difficulties they laboured under, in regard to the Sugar-Trade. In pursuance of the Petition, a Bill was brought into the House for granting Liberty to carry Sugar directly to foreign Markets. The Bill passed into a Law, entitled, An Act. High Interest in Sugar Plantations, where the Produce of the Land is reduced to a low Price, and any large Sum is owing, will infallibly ruin the landed Debtor, sooner or later, in Proportion to the Sum he owes, which has been the unfortunate Case of many of the Sugar Planters. The Proceeds of surplus Sugars may amount to many Thousands of Pounds Sterling, which will of course center in Great Britain.
