ABSTRACT

The Pamphlet, intitled, ‘The present State of the Nation,’ is certainly worthy of public attention; and tho’ the author was far from agreeing with the author in several of his leading principles, he was ready to admit the merit which he may claim as a man of abilities, improved by industry. He examines whether England has more or less than eight times the ability of Ireland to pay and also examines whether Ireland pays more or less than her proportion to the general cause. As for Ireland, it is by nature in so great a proportion marshy and mountainous, and so far deficient in culture and population, that the eleven millions of Irish plantation acres which it contains cannot possibly be / estimated at more than three millions.
