ABSTRACT

An attempt has been made, therefore, to pick out several of the most relevant examples—the most important of which is that of Vargas’ rule in Brazil. Vargas wished to free Brazil from dependence on foreign capital and to industrialize the economy. From the very start Vargas sought to create a national party of reform, albeit through an authoritarian system. Vargas wished to free Brazil from dependence on foreign capital and to industrialize the economy. The diversification of the economy and the increase in prosperity which followed proved an important popular ingredient in Vargas’ rule. The peronista economic policy was based on fascist principles. Peron’s dealings with Britain were particularly successful and resulted in a number of important concessions. Peronista economic policy involved, naturally enough, control of foreign economic interests. It had proved easy enough to obtain concessions from Britain, in particular the ending of British control of the railways, but in other cases peronista policy was less fortunate.
