ABSTRACT

Many of the characteristics of European fascism may be found in certain of the African countries, though it is rare for any number to be found at the same time in one country. Some of the European characteristics of fascism are, of course, totally absent from the African scene, so attention will be devoted very largely to the nationalist, socialist, militarist and racial aspects of current African politics in relation to fascism and, in addition, to the concept of leadership as presently understood in Africa. In South Africa has arisen a form of political life which is in many aspects fascist, including institutions, policies, philosophy and personnel. Economic prosperity has been based upon use of immense mineral resources and a large and politically powerless labour force. African armies play an important part in the cultural as well as the political life of their countries. They are seen as guarantors of national security and well-being.
