ABSTRACT

The economic problem of Greece was not suddenly created in the aftermath of the national election of 4 October 2009. It had been an existing one which was deepening over the years but only came to surface with the outbreak of the world financial crisis. The Greek statistic agency was continuously publishing wrong data for the course of the economy. The Greek crisis principally derives from the serious financial problem the country is encountering. It has therefore been expected that international media would cover in detail developments concerning the economy. All newspapers have agreed on the unacceptable status of the Greek economy. In so doing, they started to concentrate on its impact and principally on the danger for the stability of the common currency and, further, the expansion of the Hellenic crisis on the eurozone and the world economy. French and Italian newspapers also expressed a continuous fear that the Greek Government would go bust.
