ABSTRACT

The chapters in Part III describe four tested means by which the adaptive visions of natural resource agencies may become reality. Each of these techniques has evolved to meet specific management needs in balancing human wishes and expectations for certain services within legal and ecosystem constraints. Though all of these chapters deal with amenity services by the U.S. National Park Service, the U.S. Forest Service, and Parks Canada, they represent potential opportunities for application of a wide array of ecosystem management issues. Each of these techniques is dedicated to better serving the public, each involves the public in the decision process, and each recognizes limits to supply-side increases and permits more equitable constraints upon demand.
