ABSTRACT

In the May 1995 general elections, the Belarusian Patriotic Movement ran in a bloc named the National Movement of Belarus together with the Liberal Democratic Party and the Slavic Assembly. Alyaksandr Bukhvostau became the leader of the Belarusian Party of Labor, which in the spring of 1995 claimed to have 560 members who were mostly labor union activists. The Socialist Party of Belarus was founded after the 1994 presidential elections for those favoring the restoration of Soviet era policies. The United Democratic Party of Belarus (UDPB) was formed on 4 November 1990 and was officially recognized in March 1991 as the earliest registered independent political party. The UDPB was the first political party outside the Belarusian Communist Party. The Green Party of Belarus was founded in December 1992 and registered in February 1993. The Liberal Democratic Party of Belarus was organized in February 1994 as rightist pan-Slavic movement advocating close links with Russia and the recreation of Russia's imperial territory.
