ABSTRACT

Croatia formed part of the province of Illyricum during the time of the Roman Empire. As conflicts between Croatian and Serbian leaders intensified following the assassination of Radic in August 1928 by Serb nationalists, the Serbian King Aleksandar tightened control over the country. The forces most implicated in war crimes were irregular formations such as the armed wing of the neo-fascist Croatian Party of Rights (CPR), styled as the Croatian Defense Force. The two-party opposition coalition, consisting of the Social Democratic Party and the Croatian Social Liberal Party, gained 47.02% of the vote and 71 seats. A coalition of the ultra-nationalist CPR and the Croatian Christian Democratic Union gained only 3.31% of the vote and 5 parliamentary seats. In April 1993, the organization declared itself the Social Democratic Party of Croatia. The CPR was originally formed in 1861 by Ante Starcevic and Eugen Kvaternik. Paraga subsequently formed a new party-the 1861 CPR.
