ABSTRACT

The Lithuanians are part of the Baltic group of Indo-Europeans. Their ancestors, the Samogitians and Aukštaicai, inhabited the territories of present- day Lithuania before the tenth century ad. The Lithuanians are part of the Baltic group of Indo-Europeans. During the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, the Grand Duchy of Lithuania was a multinational state. The Communist era effectively expired in Lithuania during 1990–1991. The Lithuanian Democratic Labor Party was established on 19 December 1990 as a reformist and pro-independence successor to the Lithuanian Communist Party. The Lithuanian Social Democratic Party was originally established in 1896 and restored on 17 January 1990. Homeland Union-Lithuanian Conservatives was established on 1 May 1993 and was chaired by former Sajudis leader and Lithuanian President Vytautas Landsbergis. The Lithuanian Liberal Union was established on 11 March 1990 under its chairman Eugenijus Gentvilas, with an initial membership of under 1,000 people.
