Introduction

Ecotoxicology became necessary when human beings began introducing chemicals into the environment. No one was concerned about the fate of these chemicals until they turned up in unexpected places or had adverse effects on organisms in the environment. Some substances have an immediate, lethal effect, whereas others may have impacts which do not become manifest until later, e.g. when a population declines as a result of reduced fertility.
