ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book aims to provide a comprehensive design manual for the design of remediation systems for the treatment of soils and groundwater contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons. It is written for professionals familiar with remediation concepts, the design process, and the regulatory basis of cleanup control, as well as less experienced designers in the field of remediation engineering. The book focuses on remediation practices from the design engineer's point of view. It discusses microbiology of bioremediation and the factors and conditions affecting the biodegradation process. The book deals with the remediation of petroleum products, principally the lighter hydrocarbons.
