ABSTRACT

One issue that must be considered when organizing one's transportation safety program is including a component to deal with the spill of hazardous materials. Emergency response measures may range from the driver acting immediately to handle the situation to the driver simply calling 911. In any case, the safety of the driver should be the primary consideration. Drivers should do nothing that would jeopardize their safety or the safety of another. In emergency response training, one may utilize a wide range of resources to teach drivers how to respond to different emergencies. Classroom lectures are an often-used means of training to communicate requirements to drivers. Each driver should be supplied with two primary pieces of emergency response information: the shipper’s bill of lading and a copy of, or the appropriate section from, the Emergency Response Guide.
