ABSTRACT

Communication is a large focus of the Department of Transportation’s hazardous materials regulations. 49 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) 172.300 series regulations specify what markings have to appear on hazardous materials packages, freight containers, and transport vehicles. Bulk packaging must follow marking requirements similar to those for non-bulk packaging. These requirements are found in 49 CFR 172.302, in which the first item addressed is the need to mark bulk packaging with the four-digit identification number of the material. The 172.400 series of regulations, which provides various requirements for hazardous materials labeling, opens by stating that hazardous material packages or containment devices must be labeled using the guidelines given in this regulation. The hazard class or division of the hazardous material being carried must first be identified using the Hazardous Materials Table.
