ABSTRACT
What is health promotion and how does it relate to the public’s concerns about hazardous waste? This chapter contains a definition of health promotion and summarizes the strategies used to improve both personal and community health. Public health practitioners use health promotion strategies, which originated in Europe in the nineteenth century, to prevent or mitigate both general and specific causes of disease. These strategies are adapted here as actions to reduce the human health impacts caused by exposure to hazardous substances.
