ABSTRACT

Sickle cell anemia was described by James B. Herrick’ (1861–1954) in 1910, after his intern (Ernest E. Irons) saw and recorded peculiarlyshaped red blood corpuscles in a 20-year-old Grenadian dental student who was seen as a patient at Presbyterian Hospital, Chicago, in 1904. This patient was attended by Irons and Herrick until he (the patient) graduated from the Chicago College of Dental Surgery and returned to Grenada 2 .
