ABSTRACT

This sermon was published in quarto in 1692. Fulton, Bibliography of Boyle, p. 171, differentiates between two versions, distinguished by the width of the border on the title-page and the line endings on pp. 33 and 37. He designates these issues A and B, though it would be more proper to call them editions A and B, since they are from substantially different settings of type. He adds: ‘It is not clear from internal evidence which appeared first’. The present text is taken from his version B, since, where the two differ, the readings in this one are almost invariably preferable. The facsimile of the title-page on p. 36, however, is taken from version A. The running title in the original is: A Sermon at the Funeral of the Honourable Robert Boyle. On the context of this work, see above, pp. xxix–xxxi.
