ABSTRACT

Add. MS 4229, fols 33–49. Written in sections, with fols 33–5 and 36–40 in a scribal hand, the remainder in Pett’s holograph. The scribal text on fol. 40 breaks off in mid-sentence and is continued (after an intermediate leaf, fol. 41, which is blank except for Miles’s endorsement: ‘Sir Peter Pett’) on fol. 42 in Pett’s hand, presumably because the process of retranscribing the notes was never completed. Pett also added further remarks in his own hand at the end of the scribal text on fol. 35, while many of the insertions in the scribal sections are in his hand. The MS has the following original pagination: pp. 1–5 (fols 33–5 v), pp. 1–9 (fols 36–40) and pp. 13–21 (fols 42–6); the other leaves are not paginated. There is a blank leaf (unfoliated) between fols 46 and 47. Fol. 49 is a part sheet which is blank except for Miles’s note on the verso: ‘Sir P. Petts Papers[.] bundled separately to prevent Confusion being writt at different times’; in addition, fol. 35 is endorsed by William Clarke: ‘Sir Peter Pets Papers of Mr Boyle’, while fol. 48 v is endorsed, ‘Relating to Mr Boyles Life’, in the top half of the lefthand margin by Wotton, and ‘Sir Peter Pett’ by Miles. Certain of the blank pages (fols 41 v, 46 v [bis], 49) have impressions of the text of the facing pages on them (in the case of fol. 49 v, that of the first page of Doc. 7, which follows it in the MS). See further above, pp. xxxii–v.
