ABSTRACT

Add. Ms 4229, fols 56–7. Holograph. This letter was first published in William Bray’s edition of Evelyn, Memoirs (1827), vol. iv, pp. 403–16, from the version of it kept by Evelyn which is now Add. MS 28104, fols 21–2. In John Forster’s 1850–2 edition of Evelyn’s Diary and Correspondence, vol. iii, pp. 390–8, extra footnotes were introduced recording places where the Add. MS 28104 text published by Bray differed from that in Add. MS 4229 from which the text published here is taken. Trivial differences between the two versions have not here been tabulated, and neither have passages which appear in this version but not in the copy in Add. MS 28104 (referred to in the notes as ‘Evelyn’s copy’): these can be readily identified by comparing this text with Forster’s edition of 1850–2. However, for the sake of completeness, substantial passages which appear only in the other version and not this one have here been noted in endnotes. For the background to this letter, see above, pp. xli–iv.
