ABSTRACT

Royal Society Boyle Letters 3, fols 108 v–9. Ibid., 3, fol. 120 v, is endorsed by Wotton: ‘Mr Kirkwood’s Papers concerning Mr Boyle’, and it is clear that this letter accompanied transcripts of various documents, now ibid, 3, fols 108 and 118–20, and 5, fols 119–20, together with others which no longer survive, presumably because they were returned to Kirkwood. Kirkwood’s copies, which were published by Birch in an appendix to his Life, Works, vol. i, pp. clxxxviii–cciv, will be included in the Pickering Masters edition of Boyle’s correspondence, in conjunction with the original letters concerning the affair to which they relate. The letter published here has been endorsed at its head by Birch: ‘No. 1. Mr Kirkwood to Dr Wotton’; it was printed by Birch in Works, vol. i, pp. clxxxviii–ix, without the list at the end. It is written in a scribal hand, like the material that it accompanied; the first insertion (only) is in Kirkwood’s own hand. See also above, pp. xli–ii.
