ABSTRACT

The GP referred her to the social worker for respite care. Mrs McKillop agreed to a period of respite care in a residential home so that a clearer assessment of her abilities could be made. The assessment ensures that the care is fitted to the Client’s needs, and also that strengths in the client and his environment are drawn upon. In the assessment phase, information about the client has been recorded and classified in some way. The assessment indicated that Paddy was late on every one of 25 occasions monitored, usually between two and six minutes. The social worker visited the client and the Ward Sister, and at this screening stage decided that an occupational therapist and district nurse should be involved in a fuller assessment. The social worker and occupational therapist undertook a joint assessment visit to the client in hospital and to the client’s home.
