ABSTRACT

Active involvement in music is central to anyone whose job is to enable others to experience the fulfilment of live music-making. Music has become divided into categories, and composers have become associated with what many people like to call “classical” music. A whole battery of exciting new approaches to composing have been developed, using ideas borrowed from the sounds of our modern world and transformed into musical material, mathematical and electronic sounds and a whole lot besides. These ideas offer a wealth of stimuli for our own musical creativity. Many musicians would agree that they derive greatest pleasure from playing chamber music with others whom they like and respect. The choice of appropriate repertoire is one of the most significant factors in successfully making contact with the audience. Ideally the music making, through appropriate choice of repertoire, opens up channels of communication which can then be used to develop the concert into a social occasion.
